Can DCF Talk to Your Child at School? A Back-to-School Guide for Connecticut Parents

August 01, 20251 min read

Back-to-school season can be overwhelming for any parent. But when DCF is involved, it adds another layer of stress. At The Christie Law Firm, we help families prepare, stay informed, and protect their rights. Here’s what you need to know:

1. School Enrollment & Custody: If DCF has removed your child or you’re under investigation, make sure you understand who has legal authority to enroll your child or make decisions.

2. DCF Communication with Schools: DCF workers may speak with your child’s teacher, counselor, or school staff. While this is allowed during an investigation, you have the right to be notified and involved.

3. Prepare Documentation: Ensure you have updated custody orders, school registration paperwork, and any agreements with DCF in writing. These documents help avoid confusion during the school transition.

4. Talk to Teachers (If Safe): If you feel comfortable, let the school know about your situation and how they can support your child’s emotional needs. Consider sharing a brief note or meeting with the school social worker.

5. Always Speak to Your Lawyer: Never agree to new plans or sign paperwork without speaking to your attorney. If you don’t have one yet, contact our office immediately.
